The Dallas Stars have solidified their goaltending position by signing Jake Oettinger to an eight-year contract extension. The new deal, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $8.25 million, was announced by the team on October 17, 2024. This contract ensures that the 25-year-old goaltender will remain a central figure for the Stars through the 2032-33 season.

This long-term agreement is the second significant goaltender contract this month, following Jeremy Swayman‘s eight-year, $66 million contract with the Boston Bruins. Oettinger, who was entering the final year of a three-year agreement with a $4 million annual salary, was set to become a restricted free agent this off-season.

Jake Oettinger has been impressive in his early NHL career. This season alone, he has achieved a perfect start, winning all three of his games while maintaining a 1.63 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage. The Lakeville, Minnesota, native has also accumulated a 116-48-23 record with a 2.49 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage across 196 career games.

Oettinger’s performances have not only caught the eye during the regular season but also in the playoffs. He has compiled a 23-22 record in 47 Stanley Cup Playoff games over recent seasons, contributing significantly to the Stars’ consistent appearances in the postseason and their success in reaching the Western Conference Final in both 2023 and 2024.

Commenting on the extension, Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill said, “Jake has established himself as one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL. His unique blend of poise, size, athleticism, and mental toughness has helped our team reach new heights. He’s an integral part of our core that allows us to contend for the Stanley Cup.”

Additionally, Oettinger has been a leader off the ice, actively participating in the team’s community efforts. This extension assures that he and his wife, Kennedi, will continue to be part of the Dallas Stars family.

Oettinger’s career achievements include being named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto and securing a strong record in international competitions, having represented the United States at junior and world championships. He was originally drafted by Dallas as the 26th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
