984 Daughters Born for Every 1000 Sons in Uttarakhand on National Girl Child Day
A report released on National Girl Child Day reveals that Uttarakhand has witnessed a significant improvement in its child sex ratio, with 984 daughters being born for every 1000 sons in the state. This achievement can be attributed to the consistent efforts of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Girl Child, Educate the Girl Child) campaign and the strict implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
The districts of Almora, Chamoli, Nainital, Pauri, and Udham Singh Nagar have shown higher numbers of female births compared to male births. However, Dehradun, Tehri, and Champawat districts still lag behind in terms of the child sex ratio.
The state government, through its awareness campaigns, has played a crucial role in bringing about this positive change. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16 indicated a child sex ratio of 888 girls per 1000 boys in Uttarakhand for ages up to five. However, the latest survey report of 2020-21 shows an improvement with the child sex ratio now standing at 984.
