Diamondbacks’ Gabriel Moreno Sets Record for Longest At-Bat

LOS ANGELES — Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno made history on Monday night by forcing Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Landon Knack to endure an astonishing 16-pitch at-bat, tying the franchise record. Following a two-run homer in his previous plate appearance, Moreno’s marathon ended with a line-out to right field.
Moreno’s impressive at-bat is now tied for the longest in Diamondbacks history, equaling the record set by Pavin Smith against the New York Mets in 2021. Other players to have achieved this feat include Rusty Ryal and Karim Garcia.
“That was awesome,” said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. “The whole dugout was engaged, and it took an inning off of their pitcher’s ability to throw to three more batters. He wasn’t giving in.”
Moreno acknowledged the challenge, calling it “definitely the longest at-bat of my life.” He said he was hoping to connect for a single during the grueling exchange.
The record for the longest plate appearance in MLB history belongs to Brandon Belt, who worked a 21-pitch at-bat in 2018 while playing for the San Francisco Giants.
On the same night, the Diamondbacks secured a 9-5 victory over the Dodgers, fueled by home runs from Moreno along with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Geraldo Perdomo. The win marked Arizona’s fifth in their last seven games, improving their record against Los Angeles this season to 3-2.
Brett Hansen, a sports reporter at the game, noted the 16-pitch at-bat as a highlight, showcasing Moreno’s determination and skill. As the game progressed, the Diamondbacks demonstrated a solid offensive performance that kept the Dodgers at bay.
The Diamondbacks’ next challenge will come Tuesday night as they continue their series against the Dodgers with Ryne Nelson taking the mound in place of the injured Eduardo Rodriguez.
