Former professional rugby league player Brandon Wakeham has been taken into custody by authorities on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into potential drug-related activities. Wakeham, who previously played for the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers in the National Rugby League, is currently associated with the Blacktown club, which serves as a feeder team to the Manly Sea Eagles.

The 25-year-old has not yet been formally charged, and the circumstances surrounding his arrest have not been disclosed. Following a brief NRL stint with the Tigers last year, Wakeham made the transition to Blacktown in the hopes of securing a backup role behind established halves Daly Cherry-Evans and Luke Brooks at Manly.

With 40 NRL appearances under his belt since his debut in 2019, Wakeham was set to play in the NSW Cup clash against the Bulldogs at North Sydney Oval alongside fellow half Jake Arthur. The abrupt turn of events involving Wakeham comes at a sensitive time for the rugby league community, coinciding with the commencement of the much-anticipated Magic Round in Brisbane and the inaugural women’s State of Origin match.

Aside from Wakeham’s arrest, another NRL player, Braydon Trindall of Cronulla, has also been embroiled in legal issues after being charged with failing an alcohol and illicit drugs test. Scheduled to appear in Sutherland Local Court, Trindall’s availability for Cronulla’s upcoming match remains uncertain pending the outcome of his legal proceedings.

The NRL and relevant law enforcement agencies have yet to release official statements regarding both Wakeham and Trindall’s situations, leaving fans and stakeholders on edge amidst the unfolding developments within the rugby league landscape.
