Doctor Arrested for Rape Allegations in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WCYB) — Dr. Atif Atyia, a 68-year-old physician from Jonesborough, has been charged with aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery following an investigation by the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD).
The arrest was made on March 4, after a patient reported to the JCPD that she was raped during an office visit to Atyia’s practice on West Market Street. This claim initiated an investigation by the JCPD Special Victims Unit, which started on February 19.
Police executed a search warrant at Atyia’s medical practice as part of their investigation. The JCPD worked alongside the Office of the District Attorney General, presenting their findings to the Washington County grand jury this week, which subsequently issued a true bill against Atyia.
Atyia has been transported to the Washington County Detention Center, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond. The police are encouraging anyone who believes they may be a victim to come forward.
“We take these allegations very seriously and urge anyone with information to contact us immediately,” said Sgt. Shane Williams of the JCPD Special Victims Unit. Victims can reach him at (423) 434-6110 or contact Crime Stoppers at (423) 930-6535.
