Donatella Versace Announcement Instagram Post

NEW YORK, March 13, 2025 — Donatella Versace has officially stepped down as the brand’s creative director after nearly three decades, a move that marks the conclusion of a significant era in fashion. The 69-year-old designer announced her transition to Chief Brand Ambassador via Instagram, confirming that Dario Vitale will take the reins as chief creative officer starting April 1, 2025.

During her tenure, Donatella has been instrumental in modernizing Versace and expanding its global reach. She assumed leadership following the murder of her brother, Gianni Versace, in 1997, and has since maintained the label’s signature blend of bold, glamorous, and daring styles.

In her post, Donatella expressed gratitude to her team, stating, “I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees at Versace that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades.” She acknowledged her brother’s lasting influence, saying, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy.”

Dario Vitale, who previously served as design director at Miu Miu, shared his excitement about joining Versace. “The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion,” he said. In his statement, Vitale thanked Donatella for her trust and expressed his commitment to leading the brand into the future.

This leadership change comes amid significant alterations at Capri Holdings, which purchased Versace for $2.1 billion in 2018 and has recently explored strategic shifts, including a potential sale of the brand. Donatella’s exit comes at a time of transition, with Vitale’s appointment signaling a new phase for the luxury house.

Throughout her career, Donatella has remained synonymous with Versace, with numerous celebrity endorsements and appearances solidifying her status within the fashion industry. High-profile stars such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have donned her designs, further cementing the brand’s relevance in contemporary culture.

At her Milan Fashion Week show on February 28, Donatella paid homage to her brother by referencing his final collection from autumn/winter 1997. Her nostalgic tribute sparked speculation regarding her stepping down as creative director, which has now been officially confirmed.

As she embraces her new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, Donatella stated, “I will remain Versace’s most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.” With Vitale leading the creative direction, all eyes will be on how Versace evolves while still honoring the legacy established by both Gianni and Donatella.
