MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Donte DiVincenzo has emerged as a key contributor for the Minnesota Timberwolves since stepping into the starting lineup, showcasing his versatility and aggressive mindset. The 27-year-old guard delivered a season-high 27 points in Saturday night’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies, despite the team’s 125-120 loss.

DiVincenzo’s attack-first mentality has revitalized the Timberwolves’ offense, which recorded its highest scoring output since November. The team shot 57% from the field and 41% from 3-point range, with six players scoring in double figures. DiVincenzo also dished out seven assists and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, nine of which were on the defensive end.

“Thinking shot first, and then if they take that away, now you have a roller, now you have weak side, now you have other options,” DiVincenzo said. “So when I’m thinking shoot first or score first, it’s not necessarily what I’m going to do every time, but the mindset allows me to see everything else.”

Since replacing veteran point guard Mike Conley in the starting lineup, DiVincenzo has averaged 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in January, his best monthly performance this season. His ability to play off the ball has complemented stars Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle, both of whom thrive with the ball in their hands.

Timberwolves coach Chris Finch praised DiVincenzo’s impact, saying, “He’s pushing the pace, he’s creating, super smart, rebounding at a high level. He’s been huge.” Finch also noted that Conley’s move to the bench has provided flexibility, allowing the team to experiment with different lineups and rotations.

DiVincenzo’s resurgence comes after a slow start to the season, during which he was miscast as a primary ball-handler. Prior to joining the Timberwolves in a blockbuster trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, DiVincenzo excelled as a 3-and-D specialist with the Golden State Warriors and Knicks. Last season, he ranked third in the NBA in 3-pointers made, shooting 40.1% from beyond the arc.

With the Timberwolves finally utilizing him in a role that suits his skillset, DiVincenzo has helped the team win three consecutive games, including victories over teams with winning records. His performance has silenced trade speculation ahead of the February 6 deadline, solidifying his place in Minnesota’s rotation.
