Dontrelle Willis Derek Jeter World Series

MIAMI, Fla. — Former Miami Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis reminisced about his Major League Baseball career and brought up a memorable moment involving Derek Jeter during a recent exchange with David Ortiz.

The conversation took place on October 7, 2025, after the trio engaged in some nostalgic banter. Willis recalled a key moment from the 2003 World Series, where he struck out Jeter. “Cap is mad that I struck him out in the World Series, and he still has not forgiven me for that,” Willis said.

Jeter, who appeared to be hesitant to revisit the past, chose to let Willis and Ortiz continue their friendly chat instead. This light-hearted exchange showcased the camaraderie and competitive spirit that still exists within baseball.

In 2003, the New York Yankees faced the then-Florida Marlins in the World Series, ultimately resulting in a six-game victory for the Marlins, marking their second championship. Jeter finished that series with an impressive .346 batting average, tallying nine hits, two RBIs, and scoring five runs.

The interaction between Willis and Jeter was particularly interesting given Jeter’s connections to both teams. Before his role as a sports broadcaster with Fox Sports, Jeter served as CEO of the Marlins from 2017 to 2022. Under his leadership, he focused on rebuilding the team through its farm system, which included trading superstar Giancarlo Stanton to the Yankees.

Despite the challenges, the Marlins reached the playoffs in 2020, showcasing the potential of Jeter’s strategic decisions. Meanwhile, Jeter’s legendary status with the Yankees remains undisputed.
