First Look At Amy Winehouse Biopic 'back To Black' Released

The highly-anticipated biopic ‘Back to Black,’ based on the life of soul singer Amy Winehouse, released its first trailer, giving fans a glimpse of the upcoming film. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, known for her work on John Lennon‘s biopic ‘Nowhere Boy,’ the movie features fresh talent Marisa Abela as Winehouse.

The short clip shows Abela’s striking transformation into the late Grammy-winning artist, accurately capturing her essence. Although the trailer only provides snippets, Abela’s performance appears promising, showcasing various aspects of Winehouse’s tumultuous life, from her debut as an aspiring artist to her struggles with addiction and media scrutiny.

The film, approved by the Winehouse estate under the guidance of Amy’s father, Mitch (played by Eddie Marsan), also includes Lesley Manville as Amy’s grandmother, Cynthia, and Jack O’Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, her former husband. It highlights pivotal moments, such as her attempts to evade paparazzi, her descent into drug use, and her triumphant evening at the Grammys, where she garnered numerous awards despite her absence.

While the teaser trailer does not specify a release date, ‘Back to Black’ is slated to premiere in Europe and other parts of the world in April, with a US release scheduled for May 10. After considering multiple options, the Winehouse family chose this particular biopic to honor Amy’s legacy, and filming commenced in London early last year.

The film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, brings her expertise in portraying iconic musicians to ‘Back to Black.’ In addition to ‘Nowhere Boy,’ her directorial credits include ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and ‘A Million Little Pieces.’

Marisa Abela, a rising star in the industry with notable TV and film roles, such as ‘Industry’ and ‘Barbie,’ may find her breakthrough moment with this portrayal of Winehouse. Joining Abela in the cast are accomplished actors Jack O’Connell, Juliet Cowan, Eddie Marsan, and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville.
