Ganga Dussehra 2024: Significance, Rituals And Muhurat To Celebrate The Festival

Ganga Dussehra, a significant festival in Hinduism, holds great importance as it marks the arrival of the celestial river Ganga on Earth during the auspicious period of Kali Yuga. It is believed to be a day where sacred rituals and offerings to River Ganga could cleanse all sins. The festival, observed annually, coincides with the bright lunar phase of the Hindu calendar in the month of Jyeshtha.

According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance to bring Ganga Ma to Earth to liberate his ancestors. His devotion led to the descent of Ganga, however, its force was so powerful that Earth couldn’t withstand it. Lord Shiva then captured Ganga in His locks to allow Her arrival on Earth, making Ganga Dussehra a significant day to honor the river goddess.

The festival, associated with the 10th day of the Jyeshtha month’s bright fortnight, is marked by special prayers, bathe in the Ganges, and donations that devotees believe bring blessings and absolve them of their sins. The day symbolizes the union of Earth and the divine, resonating deeply with believers.

Several rituals are performed on Ganga Dussehra including the recitation of specific mantras to invoke the blessings of Ganga Ma. The day is considered propitious for spiritual practices, charity, and seeking redemption. The recital of prayers and Aarti dedicated to Ganga are an essential part of the day’s observance.
