Jannik Sinner Rolex Shanghai Masters 2024

SHANGHAI — World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his impressive form at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, defeating fifth-seed Daniil Medvedev with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on Thursday. This win marks Sinner’s fifth ATP Masters 1000 semi-final appearance of the season, as reported by ATP Tour.

Sinner’s performance at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena was characterized by a dominant display, particularly in the first set where he dropped merely three points on serve. Medvedev, meanwhile, showed signs of discomfort, receiving treatment for a shoulder issue midway through the second set.

Sinner expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “Obviously I’m very happy how I handled today and this match,” as cited by ATP Tour. He acknowledged Medvedev’s physical struggles but emphasized his own strong play.

Thursday’s victory adds to Sinner’s successful record against Medvedev, having now won seven of their eight encounters since the 2023 Miami final, according to Infosys ATP Stats. This levels their Lexus ATP Head2Head series score at 7-7.

Looking ahead, Sinner will face either third seed Carlos Alcaraz or the lower-ranked Tomas Machac in the semi-finals. Should he encounter Alcaraz, it will be a rematch of their recent thrilling encounter at the China Open.

Sinner’s win against Medvedev takes him closer to securing the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF, leading the live race by 3,020 points. However, this gap could be temporarily narrowed by Alcaraz, should he win his upcoming match against Machac on the same day.
