Byron Cowart New York Jets Signing 2025

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The New York Jets have signed defensive tackle Byron Cowart, enhancing their defensive lineup ahead of the upcoming season. The announcement came via the transaction wire on March 13, 2025.

Cowart, 28, brings experience and depth to the Jets’ defensive front after a solid 2024 season with the Chicago Bears. He appeared in 15 games, starting seven, and recorded 26 tackles, five for a loss, along with 2.5 sacks.

New York’s defensive line coach, Eric Washington, previously worked with Cowart during his tenure in Chicago, creating a familiarity that could ease the transition for the player. Cowart’s career has included stops with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans, and Miami Dolphins.

Originally drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Patriots out of the University of Maryland, Cowart has a well-traveled path in the league. He started his college career at Auburn, playing three seasons with the Tigers before finishing up at Maryland. In his NFL career, he has played 51 games, starting 21 and accumulating a total of 67 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks.

During his time with various teams, Cowart has showcased his potential, particularly in his role with the Bears last season. “I’m excited for the opportunity to play in front of the Jets’ fans and contribute to the team’s success,” Cowart said.

The Jets are looking to bolster their defensive line as they aim for a strong 2025 season, and Cowart’s addition could prove crucial in their efforts to improve following last year’s performance.
