Joe Thuney Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are currently engaged in trade discussions regarding star offensive guard Joe Thuney, according to sources reported by Dianna Russini of The Athletic. The Chicago Bears are among the teams interested in acquiring Thuney, a four-time Super Bowl champion.

Thuney, who has been a pivotal member of the Chiefs’ offensive line since signing a five-year, $80 million contract in 2021, has consistently demonstrated his value on the field. The 32-year-old spent his first five seasons with the New England Patriots, where he contributed significantly to their Super Bowl LIII win and earned a second-team All-Pro selection in 2019.

Since joining the Chiefs, Thuney has enhanced his reputation, achieving first-team All-Pro honors in two seasons and second-team All-Pro recognition in another. His performance last season solidified his position as one of the league’s top offensive guards.

With the Chiefs facing salary cap challenges, they are reportedly looking to shop Thuney alongside tight end Travis Kelce, who is expected to return in 2025. Moving on from Thuney could provide the Chiefs with significant cap relief as they prepare for the upcoming free agency period.

Russini’s report highlights Thuney’s potential as a trade asset, particularly since he was highly rated by Pro Football Focus, landing 12th among NFL guards for his performance in 2024. Chicago, which recently traded for former Detroit Lions guard Jonah Jackson, could see Thuney as a valuable addition to bolster its offensive line.

In discussions about the Chiefs’ strategic moves, general manager Brett Veach expressed optimism about reaching a long-term deal with ascending guard Trey Smith, who the team plans to franchise tag. Should the franchise tag be employed, Smith would command a one-year salary of approximately $23.4 million, which would make him the highest-paid guard in NFL history.

Merging Thuney’s and Smith’s situations demonstrates the delicate balance teams must maintain while managing salaries and preserving vital rosters. Should Kansas City trade Thuney, the addition of younger players or rebuilding strategies could come into play as they seek to optimize their line for future seasons.

As trade discussions progress, all eyes will be on how the Chiefs navigate the offseason and whether they will part ways with the accomplished offensive lineman.
