The historic La Plata Theater, a cornerstone of downtown La Plata, Maryland, is at risk of permanent closure unless the community can raise $500,000 for critical repairs. Built in 1941, the theater has been a cultural hub for generations, hosting films, live performances, and community events.

Local residents and business owners have launched a fundraising campaign, ‘Save Our Stage,’ to preserve the landmark. ‘This theater is more than just a building—it’s a piece of our history,’ said campaign organizer Sarah Thompson. ‘We’ve already raised $200,000, but we need everyone’s help to reach our goal.’

The theater requires extensive renovations, including updates to its electrical system, roof repairs, and accessibility improvements. Without these upgrades, the building may no longer meet safety codes, forcing its closure. The campaign has garnered support from local officials, including Mayor Jeannine James, who called the theater ‘a vital part of La Plata’s identity.’

Fundraising events, including a benefit concert and a silent auction, are scheduled throughout the summer. Donations can also be made online through the campaign’s website. ‘We’re hopeful the community will come together to save this treasure,’ Thompson added.
