Mets’ Young Infielders Show Signs of Improvement Amid Season Struggles

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Mets‘ young infielders, Mark Vientos and Brett Baty, are beginning to turn their season around as they seek to solidify their positions in the lineup. On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Baty started at second base, batting eighth against the Philadelphia Phillies, despite struggling with a .192 average early in the season.
Vientos, who enjoyed a breakout year in 2024, has also faced challenges this season. He entered the 2025 campaign with high expectations but started slowly, hitting just .167 before his recent improvement. The Mets have stuck by Vientos, keeping him as their everyday third baseman as he works through a slump.
After hitting a home run against the St. Louis Cardinals, Vientos showed signs of returning to form. He tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the sixth inning, showcasing his power by driving a fastball over the left-field wall. Vientos has since extended his hitting streak to six games.
Baty, too, has seen a resurgence, hitting in five consecutive games and showing improvement in his plate discipline. After hitting just 2-for-21 to start the season, Baty had his first multi-hit game on April 12, the same day Vientos launched his hitting streak.
In his recent games, Baty has managed to elevate his average and reached base multiple times. His ability to draw walks has also returned, a skill he demonstrated effectively in 2024. Now sitting with a .217 average and a .234 on-base percentage, Baty has begun to contribute more at the bottom of the lineup.
Both players are essential for a Mets team that currently sits at 13-7. Their recent performances raise hopes among fans that they can regain their form, adding depth and power to the Mets’ lineup as the season progresses. As they continue to improve, the Mets await the bigger tests that lie ahead.
