Montreal Billionaire Robert Miller Seeks Stay of Proceedings in Sex Crime Case Due to Health Concerns
Robert Miller, the Montreal billionaire facing charges of sexual assault and exploitation of multiple women and girls, has requested a stay of proceedings in his case citing severe health issues that render him incapable of participating in the trial.
In a motion submitted to the Quebec Superior Court by his legal representatives Isabella Teolis and Nicholas St-Jacques, it was argued that Miller’s advanced stage of Parkinson's disease and overall deteriorating health condition make it impossible for him to defend himself or engage in the judicial process.
Miller, the former owner of Future Electronics in Montreal, was taken into custody last week following a long investigation that revealed allegations of paying young girls for sexual acts between 1994 and 2016.
The motion highlighted that Miller’s health had significantly declined since his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1996, leaving him bedridden and dependent on round-the-clock care for basic needs.
Medical reports from Dr. John Hughes and Dr. Theodore Wein detailed Miller’s condition, emphasizing his immobility, incontinence, and the constant medical attention necessary to sustain his life.
Dr. Wein’s assessment of the risks involved in Miller attending court painted a grim picture, outlining the extensive care that would be required in a hearing environment due to the threat of life-threatening complications.
The legal team argued that conducting a trial in Miller’s absence or when his life is at significant risk would not only violate his rights but also undermine the integrity of the justice system.
Prosecutors have yet to respond to the request for a stay of proceedings, with the case scheduled for a further court appearance later this week.
