Montreal is set to host an emotional hockey game as former Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty returns to the Centre Bell, but this time donning the blue and white of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Pacioretty’s return marks his first match in Montreal wearing a rival team’s jersey, following previous appearances with the Vegas Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals.

“Everyone keeps asking if it’s different this time,” said Pacioretty before the highly anticipated season opener match between the storied rivals. “I don’t feel it’s different, but I can’t speak for others.” The reference to “others” was a nod to the always passionate Montreal fans known for their clear-cut stance against the Maple Leafs.

Pacioretty’s recent remarks might stir some dislike among the Montreal faithful. He praised the work ethic of his new Maple Leafs teammates and described their uniform as the best he’s ever worn, further heating the competitive rivalry. “I’ve played many of these Montreal-Toronto opening games, just on the other side,” he humorously added. “I’m just grateful to be part of a team where I can play.”

Getting a spot on the Maple Leafs roster wasn’t straightforward for the 35-year-old Pacioretty. He arrived in Toronto on a professional tryout basis and through successful performances during training camp secured a one-year contract. “It was a great opportunity for me,” said Pacioretty. “I had a lot to prove to myself and the team, and ultimately everyone thought it was a good fit.”

Meanwhile, Alex Barré-Boulet, a 27-year-old signing, will have his own debut moment. “I’m excited, it’s special to open the season and do it in Montreal where I grew up a fan,” Barré-Boulet shared. “I’ll be playing in front of my family; it’s a dream come true.”

In addition, the Canadiens announced a new signing with defenseman Gustav Lindstrom rejoining the team on a one-year, two-way contract. Previously part of the Canadiens last season, Lindstrom returns after a tenure with the Anaheim Ducks.

Both teams revealed their starting lineups, with notable players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner on the Maple Leafs’ side, and Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki leading the Canadiens. Injuries also impact both lineups, with key players such as Jayden Struble for the Canadiens and Joseph Woll for the Leafs listed as sidelined due to injuries.
