Nationwide Bharat Bandh Announced by Central Trade Unions and SKM Amid Ongoing Farmers’ Protests
The Central Trade Unions and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) have jointly declared a nationwide strike, known as Bharat Bandh, scheduled for tomorrow, February 16. This decision comes amidst the ongoing farmers’ protests and aims to intensify the demands put forth by the protesting farmers.
The strike, termed Gramin Bharat Bandh, will be in effect from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with a significant chakka jam planned by the farmers from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Dr. Darshan Pal, a member of the SKM National Coordination Committee, emphasized that villages across the country will observe a total shutdown, suspending all agricultural activities and rural work, including Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) projects.
While multiple state and national highways are expected to remain closed during the strike hours, schools, especially those conducting board examinations such as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), have not announced any closures. As exams are ongoing, students are advised to stay updated with the latest information provided by their school authorities.
Notably, the CBSE board examinations began on February 15, coinciding with the onset of the farmers’ protest. Given the potential traffic disruptions in Delhi and other regions, the authorities have recommended students to utilize metro services for transportation to their exam centers.
The strike will impact various sectors, leading to the closure of offices, shops, and a halt in transportation services. However, essential services like ambulances, medical shops, and schools will continue to function uninterrupted to ensure public safety during the Bharat Bandh.
