Ben Simmons Nets Game January 2025

SALT LAKE CITY — The Brooklyn Nets faced significant roster challenges during Sunday’s game against the Utah Jazz, missing key players Cam Johnson, D’Angelo Russell, and Cam Thomas due to injuries. Ben Simmons, another critical player, remains uncertain for upcoming back-to-back games against the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers.

Nets coach Jordi Fernandez confirmed that Simmons has not yet been cleared to play in consecutive games. “It’s my secret,” Fernandez said with a smile when asked about Simmons’ availability. “We probably have [decided]. We probably haven’t.” Simmons’ participation in Tuesday’s game against the Trail Blazers could influence Russell’s recovery timeline, as Russell missed his fourth consecutive game Sunday with a right shin contusion.

Johnson, who suffered a right ankle sprain on Jan. 2, also sat out his fifth straight game. Fernandez described both players as “day-to-day” but expressed optimism about their progress. “They’ve been doing their work, and we’re happy with what we’re seeing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tosan Evbuomwan, a two-way player, delivered a standout performance, scoring a career-high 22 points, including two clutch free throws in overtime. Fernandez praised Evbuomwan’s recent contributions, hinting at increased playing time for the young forward.

Injury woes extended to other players, including Trendon Watford, Bojan Bogdanovic, and Cam Thomas, all of whom were sidelined for Sunday’s game. Thomas, recovering from a left hamstring strain, won’t be re-evaluated until after the Nets’ six-game road trip.

On the Jazz side, key players like Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, and Jordan Clarkson were also absent due to injuries. Despite these challenges, the game proceeded as scheduled, unlike recent postponements for the Lakers and Clippers due to wildfires in the area.

The Nets’ upcoming games against the Trail Blazers and Clippers will test their depth and resilience as they navigate a season marked by injuries and roster adjustments. With both teams vying for better draft positioning, the outcomes of these matchups could have significant implications for their futures.
