New Sequel Series ‘Lars of the Stars’ Announced for Prime Video

ANNECY, France — A sequel to the beloved animated series Steven Universe is in development for Amazon‘s Prime Video. Creator Rebecca Sugar announced the project on June 11, 2025, during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The new series, titled Lars of the Stars, follows the character Lars Barriga, an eternal teen and space outlaw, on adventures with his pirate crew. Together, they will navigate the cosmos, smuggling contraband while staying one step ahead of the authorities and uncovering the secrets of the Gem Empire.
“I miss my world and my characters,” Sugar said at the festival. “I can’t wait to share [the sequel] with you and can’t thank you enough for all your support.” Sugar will executive produce the series alongside Ian Jones-Quartey, the original show’s supervising director.
Steven Universe originally aired on Cartoon Network from 2013 to 2020, spanning five seasons and 160 episodes. The show became known for its unique coming-of-age story set in the fictional Beach City, featuring a young boy, his alien friends, and themes of identity and love. The upcoming sequel will be the first in the franchise not to air on Cartoon Network.
The festival also saw Cartoon Network announcing a 10th season renewal for Teen Titans Go!, the longest-running animated DC series. Clips from new shows, including SuperMutant Magic Academy and The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, were showcased.
No premiere date for Lars of the Stars has been released yet, but anticipation is high among fans of the original series.
