REDMOND, Wash. — Nintendo unveiled its highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2, showcasing a console that takes performance to unprecedented heights. Powered by a custom NVIDIA processor, the Switch 2 features an NVIDIA GPU equipped with dedicated RT Cores and Tensor Cores, delivering stunning visuals and AI-driven enhancements. This new iteration boasts capabilities such as up to 4K gaming in TV mode and up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in handheld mode, allowing for sharp, smooth gameplay across a variety of settings.

The company emphasized the significant technological advancements made in the Switch 2, including 1,000 engineer-years dedicated to its design, development tools, and hardware architecture. This commitment ensures that players experience smoother gameplay and sharper visuals than ever before, with the new RT Cores enabling real-time ray tracing to inject lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows into game worlds.

“With 10 times the graphics performance of the original Nintendo Switch, we are redefining handheld gaming,” said Tetsuya Sasaki, general manager at Nintendo’s Technology Development Division. “We are dedicated to enhancing both player experience and game development.”

The implementation of Tensor Cores allows for AI-driven features, including Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which enhances image sharpness without compromising quality. Tensor Cores also facilitate AI-powered face tracking and background removal for video chat, which enhances social gaming and streaming experiences.

NVIDIA’s involvement speaks volumes about the potential of this new console. Gaming enthusiasts have already noted that the new hardware puts the Nintendo Switch 2 in competition with powerful consoles such as the Xbox Series S. “It’s basically on par with what’s available today,” commented an industry analyst on the anticipated performance of the new device.

The previous iterations of the Switch were praised for their innovative hybrid design, which blurred the lines between home and portable gaming.
