Oklahoma State Eyes Potential Coaching Change Amid Struggles
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State University is considering a major shift in its football program following the firing of head coach Mike Gundy. Gundy, who has been with the Cowboys for over two decades, was dismissed just three games into his 21st season.
The decision to part ways with Gundy came after a disappointing loss to Tulsa, leading to a cascade of challenges for the team. Since his exit, OSU has suffered three consecutive double-digit losses, intensifying the urgency to find a suitable successor.
While some non-Power Five coaches and former OSU quarterback Zac Robinson are reportedly in the running, the Cowboys may also be eyeing one of college football’s high-profile figures: James Franklin, the current head coach at Penn State.
Franklin is in his 12th season with the Nittany Lions but faces increased scrutiny due to ongoing struggles. Although he guided Penn State to the College Football Playoff for the first time last season, frustration is mounting over his team’s performance this year. Following a narrow 22-21 defeat to Northwestern, the Nittany Lions’ record stands at 3-3.
The loss was particularly notable because it marked the first time in 30 years that a team lost consecutive games while being favored by 20 points or more, according to Action Network. Given these circumstances, it is plausible that Penn State might seek a coaching change in the offseason.
If Oklahoma State aims to attract Franklin, they may also want to consider hiring his defensive coordinator, Jim Knowles, who previously held the same role at OSU. While the likelihood of securing Franklin remains uncertain, it’s a situation that should be monitored closely as the season unfolds.
