When Nintendo launched “The Legend of Zelda” in 1986, the game’s central focus was on Link, a brave swordsman. Despite being named after the princess, Zelda remained largely a supporting character, with Link battling foes and navigating tricky dungeons to save her from the villainous Ganon. This action-adventure video game became a classic, fostering a franchise that has become one of the most celebrated in gaming history.

The newly released game, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” available for the Nintendo Switch, marks a significant departure by allowing players to assume the role of Princess Zelda. This shift presents a unique opportunity to explore the kingdom through Zelda’s eyes, although some critics feel it falls short of giving her character the prominence it was poised to achieve.

Included in the plot is Link’s initial battle against Ganon, following which Zelda is freed and left to save the realm from spreading rifts. Known mostly for her strategic acumen rather than physical prowess, Zelda in this game leverages an innovative mechanic: the ability to summon “echoes” to assist her. These echoes range from ordinary items to feared monsters, aiding her in puzzle-solving and combat scenarios.

Aesthetically, “Echoes of Wisdom” resembles the 2019 “Link’s Awakening” remake, with its endearing, cartoony visuals and charming tone. As the game progresses, it becomes increasingly challenging, especially from the midpoint onwards, offering a complex experience for players.

Despite her new role, some critics argue that Zelda’s character portrayal still resembles that of Link. Her combat involvement is mostly indirect, as she relies heavily on summoned creatures to engage in battles. Though Zelda does eventually gain the temporary ability to channel Link’s sword abilities, it feels more like a nod to Link than a development of her own combat style.

Nintendo’s cautious approach in “Echoes of Wisdom” is apparent, as Zelda’s adventure resembles a typical Link saga. Critics highlight that further differentiation from Link could have provided a refreshing narrative, giving Zelda a distinct heroic journey. However, “Echoes of Wisdom” remains an engaging installment in the series, appealing to both newcomers to the franchise and long-standing fans who have awaited Zelda’s rise as a protagonist.

The game is rated E10+ by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, making it generally suitable for children aged 10 and above, with a retail price around $80. “Echoes of Wisdom” promises to be an accessible entry point for those curious about the series, allowing new players to dive right in while offering nostalgic elements for series veterans.
