As the fourth anniversary of George Floyd‘s murder looms, his family and democratic lawmakers are intensifying efforts to revive the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, emphasized the need for change and accountability in law enforcement during a recent press conference.

Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee reintroduced the bill in Congress, calling for reforms to prevent unnecessary deaths at the hands of police.

The legislation, which initially passed in the House but stalled in the Senate, aims to hold law enforcement accountable for misconduct and implement crucial training and policy changes.

George Floyd’s tragic death in 2020 at the hands of former police officer Derek Chauvin sparked a global movement against racial injustice and police brutality.

Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in a state trial and later pleaded guilty in federal court for violating Floyd’s civil rights.

Other former Minneapolis officers also faced charges and were sentenced for their involvement in Floyd’s murder, underlining the systemic issues present in policing.

Speaking at the recent press conference, Rep. Ilhan Omar urged lawmakers to take action and establish a national standard to ensure equal protection under the law.

The ongoing advocacy for the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act reflects the determination of Floyd’s family, who have been instrumental in driving the push for reform.

George Floyd’s uncle, Selwyn Jones, along with Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, another victim of police violence, continue to channel their pain into activism, striving to create meaningful change and honor their loved ones’ memories.

Despite the ongoing efforts and renewed calls for legislative action, there remains skepticism regarding the bill’s prospects, with concerns that even if passed, it may be significantly diluted from its original intent.

Nevertheless, individuals like Selwyn Jones are committed to preserving George Floyd’s legacy and ensuring that his memory is honored through continued advocacy and activism.
