Rickey Smiley Comedy Special Fool Ish Premiere

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Rickey Smiley, the anchor of America’s top nationally syndicated urban radio show, is returning to the stage with “Fool-ish,” his first comedy special in more than a decade, which will debut on May 30.

The special was secured by a streaming service after an intense bidding competition, according to sources. It was filmed at the Lyric Theater in Smiley’s hometown of Birmingham, where he is expected to showcase his signature humor, memorable characters, and sharp commentary on life and pop culture.

This marks Smiley’s first comedy special since 2011’s “Open Casket Sharp,” and also represents the directorial debut of David E. Talbert, who previously collaborated with Smiley on the films “Baggage Claim” and “First Sunday.”

“After over ten years, I knew I had to offer something that would satisfy my fans,” Smiley said in a statement. “I’ve gone through a lot of transformation and trauma these past few years. I was determined to push through it, and I believe this experience will foster a deeper connection with my audience. We can find humor in so much of life. ‘Fool-ish’ is for people of all ages, whether you grew up playing with Etch A Sketches or were raised on iPads.”

Alongside Talbert, the special is produced by Lyn Sisson-Talbert of Golden Girl Inc. The executive production team also includes Laura Lizer, Judi Marmel, Matt Beales, and John Bravakis.

Smiley, who has hosted the “Rickey Smiley Morning Show” from Atlanta for over 20 years, is not only recognized as a comedian and radio personality but is also an author. His latest book, “Sideshow: Living with Loss and Moving Forward with Faith,” details his personal experiences with grief following his eldest son’s tragic passing due to a drug overdose.

He is represented by Levity Live!, Workhouse Media, and United Talent Agency (UTA).
