Rudy Gobert Nba Head Injury 2025

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert briefly left Saturday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies after sustaining an apparent head injury but later returned to the court. The incident occurred during a rebound battle with Grizzlies rookie Zach Edey, who inadvertently struck Gobert in the head.

Gobert, a three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, was evaluated in the locker room before being cleared to rejoin the game. The Timberwolves confirmed that he showed no signs of lingering issues. “Rudy took a tough hit, but our medical team assessed him thoroughly, and he was cleared to return,” said Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch. “He’s a tough player, and we’re glad he’s okay.”

The injury scare occurred late in the second quarter as Gobert and Edey jostled for position under the basket. Edey, a 7-foot-4 rookie, was not penalized for the contact, which appeared incidental. Gobert initially stayed on the court but was escorted to the locker room shortly after.

With Gobert sidelined temporarily, backup center Naz Reid stepped in and provided solid minutes for the Timberwolves. Reid finished the game with 12 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes of play. “Naz is always ready when his number is called,” Finch added. “He gave us a big lift when we needed it.”

Gobert’s return was a relief for the Timberwolves, who are battling for playoff positioning in the competitive Western Conference. The 32-year-old center has been a key contributor this season, averaging 12.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. His presence on the defensive end is critical for Minnesota’s success.

The Timberwolves went on to defeat the Grizzlies 112-105, with Gobert playing a pivotal role in the second half. He finished the game with 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks. “It was a physical game, but we stayed focused and got the win,” Gobert said postgame. “I feel fine, and I’m just happy to help the team.”

The incident highlights the physical nature of NBA games, particularly in the paint, where players like Gobert and Edey often clash. The league has implemented stricter concussion protocols in recent years to ensure player safety, and Gobert’s quick evaluation and return demonstrate the effectiveness of these measures.

Minnesota’s next game is against the Denver Nuggets on Monday, where Gobert is expected to play. The Timberwolves currently hold the fourth seed in the Western Conference with a 27-14 record.
