Severe Weather Austin Texas Storm

AUSTIN, Texas — Residents of Austin and surrounding areas are preparing for severe weather on Friday, May 2, 2025, as a cold front moves through Central Texas. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), heavy rains, damaging winds up to 60 mph, lightning, quarter-sized hail, and even an isolated tornado are possible.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Burnet counties, with warnings in effect until 8 p.m. Central Daylight Time. “Heavy rainfall could lead to flooding and flash flooding,” warned NWS Meteorologist Chris Morris. “When there are flooded roads, don’t risk it. It’s better to be a little late getting to your destination than risking your life or the life of a first responder coming out to get you in flood waters.”

Residents are advised to stay informed and seek alternative sources for weather updates. The NWS reports that an estimated 90% of Central Texas is likely to experience rainfall on Friday. Rainfall amounts are expected to range from 0.5 to 2 inches, with localized areas potentially receiving 3 to 4 inches due to repeated thunderstorms.

The storms may also bring very large hail, defined as hail between 1.75 inches and 2.75 inches in diameter, which can cause significant damage. “Large to very large hail and damaging wind gusts will pose the highest risks, while heavy rainfall could also contribute to flooding,” Morris stated.

Weather conditions are expected to improve late Friday night as storms clear out, paving the way for sunny weather over the weekend with highs of 81 degrees on Saturday and 83 degrees on Sunday. However, starting Sunday, the region could experience another round of storms due to a developing weather pattern.

The NWS cautions that the potential exists for flash flooding, particularly in portions of Oklahoma and Northern Texas. Emergency officials in Burnet County reported a tornado that touched down Thursday, resulting in injuries and damage to several homes.

As the severe weather continues to impact the region, residents are urged to remain cautious and stay tuned for updates from local authorities.
