Siena Women's Lacrosse Sets Records In Dominant Win Over Rider

The Siena women’s lacrosse team made history on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Hickey Field, as they decisively defeated MAAC opponent Rider in a record-breaking fashion. Defying the unfavorable weather conditions, Siena showcased a dominating performance to claim a 22-4 victory, setting a new program record for the largest margin of victory in their 28-year history.

Among the standout achievements was surpassing the previous largest margin by 18 goals, with Sarah Irish‘s late goal sealing the record. Notably, this performance also equaled the program’s highest goal-scoring tally, as they matched their 22-goal feat from a game against Hartford in 2019.

Siena’s control of the match was apparent in their ironclad grip on draw controls, winning an impressive 26 out of 30 opportunities. Senior Taryn Asselin stood out by setting a new single-game draw controls record with 15, further solidifying her presence in the team’s success.

Rider, although a newcomer to the MAAC women’s lacrosse scene, faced a tough test against Siena’s formidable lineup. Led by offensive stars such as Grace Dobrzynski and Kelly Logue, who both had standout performances, the Saints showcased their prowess on the field.

The first quarter set the tone for Siena, jumping to a 7-1 lead with players like Olivia Nicholson and Rebecca Gilhooley contributing crucial goals. The team continued to build on their lead, outscoring Rider 6-2 in the second quarter to head into halftime with a comfortable 13-3 advantage.

Defensively, graduate student Jenna Colabufo played a key role with four caused turnovers in the match. The Saints’ ability to stifle Rider’s typically high-scoring offense, limiting them to just nine shots and six shots on goal, was a testament to their strong defensive display.

With this victory, Siena extended their winning streak to four games and showcased their ability to shut down potent offenses, keeping opponents to single-digit scores in five of their last six matches. The standout individual performances, coupled with the team’s record-breaking achievements, mark a memorable day for the Siena women’s lacrosse program.
