Skeletal Remains of Fugitive Sex Offender Discovered Near Concord Prison

Concord, N.H. — Authorities have identified skeletal remains found inside a shed in Concord as those of Michael Schilz, a 59-year-old fugitive sex offender. Investigators reported that a man alerted police on April 21 after discovering the remains in a dilapidated structure located on North State Street, directly across from the state prison.
Police stated that the remains had likely been in the shed for an extended period, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding Schilz’s death. An autopsy has been conducted, but the cause of death remains undetermined. No charges are expected at this time, according to Lt. Thomas Yerkes.
Schilz was a convicted sex offender, listed by the New Hampshire Department of Corrections as one of its fugitives of the week in October 2023 after violating the terms of his parole. He was previously convicted in 2005 for aggravated felonious sexual assault of a minor. Officials noted that Schilz had been known to be homeless in the Concord area.
Community members expressed shock upon hearing about the discovery. An employee at a nearby spa stated, “We are just shocked and surprised” about the remains found so close to their workplace.
Concord police are continuing to investigate the case and are urging anyone with information to contact them at 603-225-8600 or to leave an anonymous tip with the Concord Regional Crimeline at 603-226-3100.
This property has a troubled history, as it was previously the site of an arson that resulted in the death of a resident back in 2005. The area has remained largely vacant since then.
