Sparta Prague Triumphs in Champions League Opener Against Salzburg
Sparta Prague celebrated a jubilant start to their UEFA Champions League campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg. The match, held at the epet Arena in Prague on September 18, 2024, marked Sparta’s most significant win in the tournament since the turn of the century.
The home team took the lead in spectacular fashion, with Kaan Kairinen opening the scoring just two minutes into the game. The early goal set the tone as Sparta Prague displayed determination and control.
Nigerian striker Victor Olatunji proved instrumental in the team’s success. Known for his prowess on the field, Olatunji secured the second goal in the 42nd minute, breaking through Salzburg’s defense with precision.
As the match progressed into the second half, Sparta Prague maintained their momentum. Qazim Laci added a third goal in the 58th minute, sealing a memorable win for the Czech club. The triumph is a significant feat for Sparta Prague, as it is the first time they have won a group stage game by more than two goals since defeating Willem II back in 1999.
On the opposing side, Salzburg, managed by former Liverpool assistant Pepijn Lijnders, struggled to gain a foothold. The team experienced consecutive losses across competitions, having previously succumbed to Rapid Vienna in their domestic league.
In other Champions League action, Bologna made their return to the competition after several decades. Facing Shakhtar Donetsk, the Italian club drew 0-0 in a hard-fought match. Despite their efforts, Bologna failed to capitalize on their chances, missing several opportunities to score, including a penalty.
