HOUSTON, Texas – The Phoenix Suns faced a tough challenge on February 12, 2025, falling 119-111 to the Houston Rockets despite a strong performance. The Suns, missing several key players, fought hard but struggled to overcome persistent issues.
The Rockets capitalized on 18 turnovers by the Suns, scoring 28 points off these mistakes. Tyus Jones, stepping in for injured stars, was notably responsible for six turnovers, which led to easy baskets for the Rockets.
Kevin Durant put up an impressive 37 points on 15-of-22 shooting, along with nine assists, in a valiant effort. “We had our chances, but those turnovers really cost us,” Durant said after the game. “We’ve got to be better if we want to win these close games.”
The Suns’ difficulties were exacerbated by injuries to their three best guards, including Devin Booker, who missed the game due to a back contusion sustained earlier in the week. Booker had previously played 26 straight games, showcasing his key role on the team.
Bradley Beal also remained sidelined, dealing with left big toe soreness. Since joining Phoenix, Beal has missed 35% of potential games due to various injuries. “It’s frustrating, the injuries are piling up with no major issues, just little nagging stuff,” Beal remarked prior to the game.
Houston took a slight edge early in the game, outscoring the Suns 19-14 on second-chance points. Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer acknowledged the need for improvement in finishing possessions: “When we backslide in focus, it becomes difficult to manage the game.”
Despite a strong offensive showing to start the game, especially with contributions from players like Bol Bol, who had 15 points and Nick Richards with 11 points and 13 rebounds, the Suns couldn’t maintain the lead. The game was unusually close, featuring multiple lead changes throughout.
At one juncture, the Suns led by as many as eight points entering the fourth quarter, only to see Houston respond with a decisive 11-2 run to claim the lead for good. Dillon Brooks of the Rockets capped this surge with crucial 3-pointers, sealing Phoenix’s fate.
Houston’s Tari Eason led the way for the Rockets, contributing 25 points and nine rebounds, while Amen Thompson achieved a triple-double with 18 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. “We just tried to keep pressure on Durant, he’s an elite scorer. Our defense made the difference in the end,” Eason commented postgame.
Moving forward, the Suns will aim to regroup during the upcoming All-Star break, where they’ll face the San Antonio Spurs. With injuries hampering their roster, maintaining performance consistency will be critical for a team looking to return to the postseason. Meanwhile, Houston prepares for a matchup against the Golden State Warriors, hoping to build on their recent success.
