Sydney Sweeney Shares Behind-the-Scenes Photos from Upcoming Christy Martin Biopic
Actress Sydney Sweeney recently unveiled a series of photos depicting her transformation into former professional boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biopic. The images, shared on her Instagram account, display Sweeney with a distinctive ’90s mullet and noticeable muscle gain to accurately portray Martin. Filming has commenced under the direction of David Michod, although the project currently remains untitled.
“Well, the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes, so here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now,” Sweeney wrote in her Instagram post. Her portrayal of Martin aims to bring to life the story of a woman who gained prominence in the boxing world, holding the super welterweight world champion title in 2009.
Christy Martin’s life story is marked by triumph and tragedy. In 2010, Martin survived a violent attack by her husband, James Martin, who was later convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder. In 2020, Martin was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing her impact and contributions to the sport.
The film’s cast includes Ben Foster as James Martin, with supporting roles played by Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero. Production is backed by Anonymous Content, Black Bear, Fifty-Fifty Films, Votiv, and Yoki Inc.
Sweeney expressed her dedication to the role, stating, “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all.”
Sweeney previously discussed her enthusiasm for the physical challenges of the role, highlighting her background in kickboxing and grappling during her teenage years. “Christy’s story isn’t a light one; it’s physically and emotionally demanding,” she shared, noting the significance of portraying a figure who broke gender stereotypes and thrived despite personal adversities.
In addition to her current project, Sweeney has portrayed other real-life figures, including Margret Wittmer in the upcoming film “Eden,” and Reality Winter in the 2023 film “Reality.” Her diverse roles continue to showcase her dynamic range as an actress.
