Teair Tart Returns to Chargers with New One-Year Deal

LOS ANGELES, March 10, 2025 – Defensive tackle Teair Tart is set to return to the Los Angeles Chargers after signing a one-year contract worth $5.5 million. The agreement, confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, comes as the Chargers look to solidify their roster amid the NFL’s free agency period.
Tart, 28, originally joined the Chargers in August after a brief stint with the Miami Dolphins. Throughout the 2024 season, he played in all 17 games, achieving 29 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. His performance contributed significantly to the Chargers’ defensive capabilities.
The Chargers have also made headlines by re-signing edge rusher Khalil Mack and punter J.K. Scott. Mack, returning for his 12th professional season, secured an extension for one year worth $18 million, fully guaranteed. This extension preemptively locks in Mack’s continued presence as a key player for the Chargers, who are intent on advancing deeper into playoffs.
“It’s the return of the Mack,” Schefter reported, emphasizing Mack’s critical role in leading the Chargers to have the NFL’s best scoring defense last year. Last season, Mack recorded six sacks and 39 tackles, proving his durability even as fellow edge rusher Joey Bosa recently faced injury struggles leading to his release.
In a bid to fortify their defense further, the Chargers also announced plans to sign former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Donte Jackson to a two-year, $13 million contract. Jackson is coming off a career-best season with five interceptions and 38 tackles, adding depth to a young secondary that includes Asante Samuel Jr. and Kristian Fulton.
Tart’s return is part of a broader effort to strengthen the Chargers’ lineup. Last year, he complemented defensive actor Poona Ford, who was pivotal in improving the NFL’s run defense from 28th to 11th in the league. A source not authorized to speak publicly confirmed Tart’s agreement to return to the Chargers.
Aside from roster additions, the Chargers also face challenges with receiver Joshua Palmer parting ways to sign a three-year, $36 million deal with the Buffalo Bills. Palmer was the team’s third-leading receiver in 2024, making his departure a notable loss as the Chargers seek to rebuild their receiving corps.
The Chargers are also addressing concerns about their running game after releasing running back Gus Edwards, which frees up $3 million in salary cap space. Currently, Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal are the only running backs confirmed under contract for the upcoming season.
The 2025 NFL League Year is imminent, urging the Chargers to solidify their roster in preparation for the new season. The focus will remain on building a competitive team capable of securing their first playoff win since 2018, as highlighted by Mack, who is 0-5 in playoff games in his career.
