Us Temporarily Pauses Funding For Unrwa Over Allegations Of Involvement In Hamas Attack

The United States has temporarily halted additional funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) due to allegations that twelve of its employees may have been involved in a Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that occurred on October 7. The Department of State has decided to pause funding in order to review these serious allegations and assess the steps taken by the United Nations to address them.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken recently had a conversation with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, stressing the need for a thorough and prompt investigation into the matter. The United States welcomes the decision to initiate an investigation and appreciates Secretary General Guterres’ commitment to taking decisive action if the allegations are proven true. Furthermore, the UN has announced a comprehensive and independent review of UNRWA to ensure complete accountability for anyone involved in the heinous attacks.

While acknowledging the critical role UNRWA plays in providing lifesaving assistance to Palestinians, including essential food, medicine, shelter, and other vital humanitarian support, the United States believes it is crucial for UNRWA to address these allegations seriously and take appropriate corrective measures. This may entail a review of existing policies and procedures to prevent the repetition of such incidents in the future.

The United States government has reached out to the Government of Israel to gather more information regarding these allegations and has also briefed Members of Congress on the matter. Close collaboration will be maintained with both the United Nations and the Government of Israel as the situation develops and more information becomes available.
