Toronto Maple Leafs Face Uncertainty with Goalkeeper Injuries
Joseph Woll, the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ designated starting goalie, has raised concerns within the team after unexpectedly being placed on the injured list before the season’s opening game against the Montreal Canadiens. This development has prompted questions about Woll’s reliability as a No. 1 goalie, given his history of injuries.
Woll was set to begin the season in Montreal on Wednesday night, yet withdrew from the lineup, allowing Anthony Stolarz to make the start. Woll’s last-minute sidelining was reminiscent of a previous incident in a critical Game 7 against the Boston Bruins, where he mysteriously withdrew on game day, prompting speculation about his fitness and consistency.
Craig Berube, the Maple Leafs’ head coach, had planned for Woll to start in Montreal, Stolarz to play in New Jersey, and Woll to return against Pittsburgh for the home opener. However, these plans were disrupted by Woll’s injury, offering Stolarz the unexpected opportunity to prove himself to the coaching staff.
Despite Woll’s troubling pattern of injuries, General Manager Brad Treliving remains optimistic about his potential. Treliving expressed confidence in Woll’s work ethic and professionalism, suggesting that the goalie could still become a significant player in the NHL.
The situation draws comparisons to the Ottawa Senators‘ struggles with Matt Murray, who ultimately lost the trust of his teammates, coaches, and management due to recurring injuries. Currently, Murray is an option for the Maple Leafs’ affiliate, the Marlies, providing a backup plan.
This predicament leaves the Maple Leafs in a precarious position at the start of a new season, with uncertainties regarding their goaltender lineup. For a team aiming for playoff success, resolving these issues quickly will be crucial.
