Tropical Storm Jerry Weather Update

Montgomery, Alabama – Scattered showers are moving across the southern half of Alabama as a cold front approaches. On Thursday afternoon, temperatures in northern Alabama are in the 70s, while southern areas near the front remain close to 90 degrees.

Showers are expected to diminish tonight as the cold front continues southward. Isolated showers might linger in the eastern and southern counties of Alabama, but general forecasts indicate that most of the state will remain dry, with highs ranging from 76 to 82 degrees.

This coming Friday and weekend promise pleasant weather, with mostly sunny skies. Highs will hover in the upper 70s and low 80s, while nighttime lows are expected in the 50s. In some cooler areas of North Alabama, temperatures could drop to the upper 40s on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Looking ahead to next week, projections indicate warm and dry conditions, with highs in the 80s and lows remaining in the 50s and low 60s. October is historically Alabama’s driest month, making extended dry spells common.

In tropical news, Tropical Storm Jerry is currently located about 680 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands, with winds reaching 60 mph. Jerry is moving west-northwest at 23 mph and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Friday before moving north into the open Atlantic.

Meanwhile, disorganized showers and thunderstorms from a trough of low pressure in the Bay of Campeche are expected to move inland over Mexico tonight, limiting further development potential for this system. No tropical storms or hurricanes are anticipated in the Gulf for at least the next week.

In football weather, the Alabama Crimson Tide will travel to face Missouri with an 11 a.m. kickoff, expecting sunny conditions and temperatures rising from the upper 70s to low 80s. North Alabama hosts Central Arkansas at 3 p.m. under sunny skies as temperatures will drop from the upper 70s to near 70 by the game’s end. Auburn will welcome Georgia at 6:30 p.m., with pleasant conditions leading to upper 60s by the fourth quarter.

On this date in history, a minimal Category 1 hurricane made landfall near Bradenton, Florida, in 1946, marking the last hurricane to directly affect the Tampa Bay area. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew completed its final landfall in South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, causing significant devastation, especially in Haiti.
