USC President Carol Folt to Retire at End of 2024-25 Academic Year
USC President Carol Folt announced on Friday that she will be stepping down from her position as the 12th president of the University of Southern California at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. Her retirement is set for July 1, 2025.
In a statement, Folt expressed her gratitude and joy for the opportunity to serve the USC community. She highlighted her over 20 years of leadership at three prominent universities and her excitement to pass the baton to the next president, who will build upon the accomplishments and create a new chapter for the institution[2].
Folt’s decision comes after a period of significant events, including criticism over her handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus during the spring semester. Additionally, there have been reports from the Los Angeles Times about the university’s admission practices, which included admitting children of donors and other prominent individuals through a role intended for top-tier sports recruits.
Despite these challenges, Folt’s tenure has been marked by several achievements, including a forward-looking vision for the university that emphasizes academic excellence, safe and welcoming campuses, and tackling grand challenges. She will remain on the USC faculty after her retirement.
The USC Board of Trustees has expressed deep appreciation for Folt’s exceptional tenure and her commitment to the Trojan Family. The board will begin the search process for the 13th university president in the coming months.
