Why There Are No NBA Games on Thanksgiving Day 2024
For the 14th consecutive year, the NBA has not scheduled any games on Thanksgiving Day, which falls on November 28, 2024. This tradition is part of the league’s annual calendar, where Thanksgiving is one of four days during the season when no NBA games are played. The other days include Christmas Eve, Election Day, and the day of the men's basketball national title game.
The primary reason for this hiatus is to avoid competition with the NFL, which traditionally dominates television viewership on Thanksgiving with its holiday games. The NFL’s presence on Thanksgiving, including three games on the holiday, has led the NBA to cede the day to football.
Historically, NBA games were played on Thanksgiving before 1982 and had brief returns between 1994 and 2006, and again from 2008 to 2010. However, since the 2011-12 season, which was delayed due to the NBA lockout, there have been no NBA games on Thanksgiving.
The NBA will resume its schedule on Black Friday, November 29, with a packed slate of 10 games as part of the NBA Cup tournament. This includes several high-profile matchups and will be broadcast across various channels, including NBA TV and ESPN.
