Josh, who began his professional career with Worcestershire in 2021, quickly became a beloved figure within the cricketing community. It was not just his prowess as a spin bowler that endeared him to all but also his infectious enthusiasm, vibrant spirit, and impeccable professionalism that stood out.

Ashley Giles, the Chief Executive Officer of Worcestershire, expressed profound sadness over the loss, emphasizing Josh’s integral role within the cricketing family at the club. Giles mentioned how Josh’s warm personality and dedication made him more than just a teammate but a cherished member of the close-knit group.

Josh Baker made his first-class debut for Worcestershire against Warwickshire at New Road in 2021 and went on to feature in 22 first-class matches, where he displayed his talent as a left-arm spinner. His most recent appearance for the team was against Durham just two weeks before his untimely demise.

On May 1, 2024, Josh played for Worcestershire’s second XI against Somerset at Bromsgrove School, where he showcased his skills by taking three wickets. Tragically, the young cricketer passed away the following day, leaving behind a promising career and a grieving cricketing community.

Signing a new three-year deal with the Pears that would have lasted until 2025, Josh Baker’s potential and dedication to the sport were evident, with 43 wickets in first-class cricket, along with appearances in List A and T20 matches.

Outside of Worcestershire, Josh also represented England at the under-19 level, playing against Sri Lanka in 2021. His talent and passion for cricket had earned him recognition beyond the club level, making his loss deeply felt across the cricketing fraternity.

The Professional Cricketers’ Association and the Professional Cricketers’ Trust extended their condolences to Josh’s family, friends, and teammates, expressing their shock and sadness at the tragic news. The England and Wales Cricket Board also offered their sympathies, acknowledging the immense loss suffered by all who knew and loved Josh.
