World Health Day 2025 Highlights Maternal Health with Urgent Call to Action

New Delhi, India – April 7, 2025 – World Health Day, a global observance led by the World Health Organization (WHO), is celebrated annually on April 7 to raise awareness of key health issues. This year’s theme, ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,’ focuses on improving maternal and newborn health to foster stronger families and communities.
The campaign emphasizes that the health of mothers and newborns is the foundation of thriving communities. The WHO is urging governments and health organizations to invest in initiatives aimed at reducing preventable deaths and enhancing the long-term well-being of mothers and babies.
“Since 2000, maternal deaths globally have declined by 40%, but progress is slowing,” the WHO stated. “Aid funding cuts pose a significant threat to lifesaving maternity services in many regions.”
World Health Day originated from the First World Health Assembly held in Geneva in 1948, where the WHO constitution was adopted. April 7 serves as a reminder of the organization’s commitment to promoting global health. The first observance took place in 1950, with themes evolving each year to highlight crucial health challenges.
This year’s focus is essential as it coincides with a time where many women still face barriers to healthcare. According to WHO, despite advances in medical technology, millions lack access to quality postnatal care, and maternal health remains a pressing issue in low-income and humanitarian crisis areas.
“Every pregnant woman deserves medical care. Financial barriers, legal restrictions, or social status should never jeopardize a mother’s health,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. “No mother should go into debt just to stay healthy.”
The theme ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures’ also aims to raise awareness of mental health issues associated with pregnancy and postpartum care. Many mothers experience anxiety or depression during and after pregnancy, but often do not receive the help they need.
World Health Day is marked by various activities worldwide, including health campaigns, public lectures, and community outreach programs. In addition, it serves as a platform for governments and organizations to introduce new health initiatives.
As part of the 2025 observance, the WHO is promoting a five-point plan focused on improving access to healthcare services for women, advocating for education, and fostering supportive health systems globally.
The WHO emphasizes that health policymakers need to take decisive actions in encouraging better healthcare access, education, and resources for women’s health. By prioritizing maternal and newborn health, they strive to construct healthier communities and generations.
World Health Day invites people around the world to unite in the effort to promote health equity and to reflect on the necessity of supporting mothers and newborns. As the world acknowledges this critical day, the call to action is clear: to ensure that healthy beginnings for mothers and newborns lead to hopeful futures.
