Yankees Fall to Reds in Extra Innings After Late Lead Disappears

CINCINNATI — The New York Yankees suffered another tough loss Tuesday night, falling 5-4 to the Cincinnati Reds in extra innings at Great American Ball Park. The Yankees initially led the game after a strong start, but a late collapse dashed their hopes for a victory.
Starting pitcher Carlos Rodon delivered a stellar performance, pitching six shutout innings on a sweltering 91-degree evening. The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a home run from Ben Rice and a two-run triple from Anthony Volpe.
Despite Rodon’s success, the Yankees’ bullpen faltered. Jonathan Loaisiga, who came in to relieve Rodon in the seventh, quickly loaded the bases and allowed the Reds to tie the game at 3-3.
In the 10th inning, the Yankees managed to score the go-ahead run, but the Reds responded in the bottom of the 11th. After a wild pitch allowed the Yankees to take the lead, Gavin Lux hit a base-loaded single to secure the win for Cincinnati.
This loss marks the Yankees’ ninth defeat in their last twelve games, leaving them just one game ahead of the second-place Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East standings.
Aaron Judge began the Yankees’ 11th inning on second base and scored after a wild pitch. However, the Yankees were unable to build on that momentum and left the bases loaded in the 10th inning.
Burns made his major league debut for the Reds, impressing early with six strikeouts but ultimately yielding to the Yankees’ lineup by the fourth inning.
The Yankees now face the Reds again Wednesday evening with hopes of ending their recent struggles. Manager Aaron Boone mentioned after the game the need to bolster the pitching rotation, hinting about potential changes as Marcus Stroman possibly returns from injury soon.
