WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Representative Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., claimed Wednesday that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found $20 billion in tax dollars that he alleges were wasted by the Biden administration. Zeldin made these remarks during a video posted on social media platform X.
According to Zeldin, a video circulated two months ago featured an EPA political appointee discussing plans to quickly disburse billions of dollars before Inauguration Day, likening the action to ‘tossing gold bars off the Titanic.’ He expressed concern that the Biden administration was aware of the waste while facilitating the urgent spending.
“The ‘gold bars’ were tax dollars and ‘tossing them off the Titanic’ meant the Biden administration knew they were wasting it,” Zeldin stated. He described this rushed funding scheme as unprecedented in EPA history, arguing that it was designed with reduced oversight.
Zeldin further noted that the EPA aims to recover these funds, which he claims are currently held by an unnamed financial institution. He emphasized that, despite no suspicion of wrongdoing by the bank, he believes any financial agreement should be terminated immediately.
“The EPA needs to resume responsibility for all of these funds,” Zeldin said, adding that his team intends to review every dollar that was disbursed.
In his statements, Zeldin highlighted his vision for a more accountable government. “The days of irresponsibly shoveling boatloads of cash to far-left activist groups in the name of environmental justice and climate equity are over,” he declared.
Additionally, Zeldin announced plans to refer the matter to the inspector general and collaborate with the Department of Justice to regain control over the funds. “Now we will get them back inside of control of government as we pursue next steps,” Zeldin said, echoing sentiments from former President Donald Trump stating a goal to usher in a new ‘Golden Age’ for Americans.
Zeldin’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny on federal spending practices related to environmental initiatives. As the 2024 election approaches, the implications of his allegations may have further political ramifications.
