Joe Schmidt Set To Replace Eddie Jones As Wallabies Head Coach

Multiple reports suggest that Joe Schmidt, the former coach of Ireland and assistant coach of the All Blacks, is expected to be named as the next head coach of the Wallabies, replacing Eddie Jones. The official announcement is expected in the coming days. Schmidt’s appointment comes after speculation that he was a front-runner for the role, given his history working alongside Rugby Australia‘s new head of high-performance, Peter Horne, at World Rugby.

The decision to appoint Schmidt comes after Rugby Australia‘s CEO, Phil Waugh, set a deadline for an announcement by March, ahead of the Wallabies’ Test against Wales in July. Expressions of interest for the role closed recently, and senior players have reportedly been informed about Schmidt’s impending appointment.

If the reports are true, Schmidt will be the third New Zealander to coach Australia, following in the footsteps of Robbie Deans and Dave Rennie. The Wallabies, currently ranked ninth, failed to progress from the World Cup group stage for the first time last year. Schmidt’s appointment raises the possibility of a blockbuster clash in 2025 when the British and Irish Lions, coached by his former mentee Andy Farrell, tour Australia.

Schmidt’s extensive coaching experience includes three Six Nations titles and a Grand Slam with Ireland, as well as victories against South Africa, New Zealand, and a series win over Australia. He temporarily stepped away from coaching after the 2019 World Cup to spend more time with his family, particularly his son Luke, who has battled health issues.

Since returning to New Zealand, Schmidt has been involved with the All Blacks as a selector, an interim coach, and the attack coach. His appointment as Wallabies head coach will give him time to prepare for their next match against Wales in July. Furthermore, it could potentially set up a face-off between Schmidt and Farrell as early as 2025, when the Lions come to Australia.

Joe Schmidt’s appointment as the next Wallabies head coach signifies a new chapter for Australian rugby, finally putting an end to the Eddie Jones saga. The rugby community eagerly awaits the official confirmation from Rugby Australia.
