Matthew Ebden And Rohan Bopanna Secure Australian Open Men's Doubles Title

Australian tennis player Matthew Ebden has emerged victorious in the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open, partnering with Indian veteran Rohan Bopanna. The duo outplayed Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, clinching the title in straight sets. Ebden served out the final game, while Bopanna delivered a smashing winning point. This marks the first men’s doubles Grand Slam victory for Bopanna. The pair’s successful partnership had previously led them to the semifinals at Wimbledon and the final at the US Open.

Ebden expressed his admiration for his partner, highlighting Bopanna’s age, 43, as a testament to his skill and determination on the court. He commended Bopanna’s unwavering spirit and called him a champion and a warrior. The Australian crowds witnessed their homegrown talent triumph and Ebden expressed gratitude towards the fans for their support.

Bopanna, jokingly referring to himself as being at “level 43” rather than 43 years old, expressed his gratitude toward Ebden, recognizing their exceptional partnership. Reflecting on their successful season in 2023, Bopanna expressed his joy at winning his first men’s doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.

Ebden’s previous triumphs at his home Slam include winning the mixed doubles title in 2013 alongside Jarmila GajdoÅ¡ová. In 2021, he reached the mixed doubles final with Sam Stosur and was a runner-up in the men’s doubles with Max Purcell in 2022. Later that year, Ebden clinched the Wimbledon men’s doubles title with Purcell. Meanwhile, Bopanna’s only other major victory was in the mixed doubles at the 2017 French Open alongside Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski.

With this win, an Australian player has secured the men’s doubles title for the third consecutive time at the Australian Open. Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis were the champions in 2022, while Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler claimed the title last year.
