Landmark Super Grocer in Steveston Destroyed in Devastating Fire

A beloved grocery store, Super Grocer, located near Steveston Community Centre, was engulfed in flames on Friday evening, resulting in the destruction of the iconic building. Richmond Fire-Rescue swiftly responded to the scene, finding the store emitting dense smoke from three sides. Due to safety concerns related to the structural collapse hazard of the old building, firefighters were unable to enter and perform a thorough search.

No individuals were reported inside the store at the time and there were no injuries reported. However, the fire was escalated to a second alarm, with crews working tirelessly throughout the night to contain the blaze.

The devastating loss of Super Grocer has left the Steveston community in sadness and shock. Residents gathered at the scene, reminiscing about the store’s decades-long presence in the area. Steveston resident, Anne Would, expressed her devastation, describing Super Grocer as a Steveston landmark and an icon that has been part of the community for generations.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie also visited the scene, referring to the situation as a “real disaster” for the city. Mayor Brodie reminisced about the countless stories associated with Super Grocer and expressed hope for its eventual rebuilding.

Assistant Deputy Chief Trevor Northrup, speaking on behalf of Richmond Fire Rescue, confirmed that the building is considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with initial indications suggesting it may have started at the back of the building, potentially outside the structure itself.

Despite the devastating loss, both Mayor Brodie and Anne Would remain hopeful that Super Grocer will be rebuilt, emphasizing its significance to the City of Richmond and Steveston residents.
