Jorge Ruvalcaba Faces Make-or-Break Season with Pumas in Clausura 2025
MEXICO CITY, Mexico — Jorge Ruvalcaba, the 23-year-old winger for Pumas UNAM, is at a pivotal moment in his career as the Clausura 2025 tournament approaches. The young footballer, who has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled for consistency, faces a season that could define his future in professional soccer.
Ruvalcaba, known for his versatility on both flanks, has primarily excelled on the left wing. However, his opportunities were limited last season due to the presence of Chino Huerta, a key player who dominated that position. Forced to adapt, Ruvalcaba often played on the right side or even as a fullback, roles that did not fully utilize his attacking strengths.
Despite these challenges, Pumas head coach Gustavo Lema has expressed confidence in Ruvalcaba’s potential. “Jorge has the talent to make a significant impact,” Lema said in a recent press conference. “He just needs to find his rhythm and confidence on the pitch.” Last season, Ruvalcaba contributed two goals and one assist in 14 appearances, a modest return for a player of his caliber.
Ruvalcaba’s journey has been marked by both promise and setbacks. After a loan spell with Standard Lieja 16 FC, the reserve team of Belgium’s Standard Lieja, he returned to Pumas in 2024. The experience in Europe was underwhelming, with Ruvalcaba struggling to adapt to the style of play. “It was a tough year for me,” he admitted. “But coming back to Pumas has given me a chance to prove myself again.”
Since his return, Ruvalcaba has been a consistent presence in Pumas’ first team, amassing 58 appearances, eight goals, and four assists. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, stands at $1.3 million, reflecting his potential despite his uneven performances. Scouts from several clubs, including Standard Lieja, have reportedly shown interest in his abilities.
Ruvalcaba’s career trajectory has also included stints with Mexico’s national teams. He has represented the country at the U-21 and U-23 levels and earned a call-up to the senior team under coach Javier Aguirre. “Playing for the national team is always an honor,” Ruvalcaba said. “It motivates me to keep improving.”
As the Clausura 2025 season looms, Ruvalcaba finds himself at a crossroads. Will he seize the opportunity to cement his place as a key player for Pumas, or will he fade into obscurity? For now, the young winger remains focused on the task at hand. “I know this is a big year for me,” he said. “I’m ready to give everything for the team and show what I can do.”
