Carolina Hurricanes Washington Capitals Playoffs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes edged the Washington Capitals 2-1 in overtime during Game 1 of their Eastern Conference Second Round playoff series on May 6, 2025, at Capital One Arena.

The Hurricanes now lead the best-of-seven series 1-0 after a gritty performance that saw both teams battling hard for every chance. The game began with a strong offensive showing from the Hurricanes, who dominated shots in the first period.

Aliaksei Protas scored the first goal of the night for the Capitals at 3:53 of the second period, assisted by Brandon Duhaime and John Carlson. This gave Washington a brief lead in a game that had been heavily contested.

Logan Stankoven tied the game at 1-1 for the Hurricanes early in the third period, capitalizing on a mishap in Washington’s defense. Stankoven’s unassisted goal at 9:42 put the pressure back on the Capitals, who struggled to keep pace with Carolina’s aggressive play.

The game proceeded to overtime after both teams failed to score in the remaining minutes of regulation. In the extra period, Jaccob Slavin became the hero for the Hurricanes, netting the game-winning goal at 3:06 into overtime with assists from Jordan Martinook and Dmitry Orlov.

The final shots on goal were 33-14 in favor of Carolina, demonstrating their control of the game. Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson played well despite the loss, making several key saves before the final goal.

“We have to find a way to generate more offense,” said Capitals coach Spencer Carbery after the game. “This is just the start of a long series.”

Game 2 is scheduled for May 8, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
