Kiki Iriafen Graduation Washington Mystics

WASHINGTON – Kiki Iriafen, a rookie for the Washington Mystics, celebrated her graduation from USC‘s Marshall School of Business in a joyful moment after Thursday’s practice. The team is set to open its season against the Atlanta Dream on May 16.

Iriafen, 22, earned her master’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation, following her undergraduate studies at Stanford in product design and mechanical engineering. Last month, USC recognized her achievements as part of Division I.

Despite her academic success, Iriafen expressed no disappointment about missing the traditional graduation ceremony. “I graduated early last year so I was able to get my big graduation, so I’m not super sad about it this year,” she noted. “I’m just excited I get to play basketball instead. I can’t believe it’s actually here.”

The Mystics struggled last season, starting with a 12-game losing streak due to injuries, but Iriafen is eager to contribute this time around. “We’ve had two preseason games, but tomorrow feels like the real deal,” she said, reflecting on her journey. “I’ve had some highs, some lows, but I wouldn’t change a single thing.”

The team’s new head coach, Sydney Johnson, has high hopes for the rookie class. She noted that the players have contributed significantly during preseason, showcasing a mature presence on the court. “I’m hopeful we can stay healthy; that’s a big thing for building momentum,” Johnson said.

This season, the Mystics’ rookie lineup includes Sonia Citron, who was drafted No. 3 overall, Iriafen at No. 4, and Georgia Amoore at No. 6. However, the team is coping with the loss of Amoore, who suffered an ACL injury during practice in April.

Iriafen described the camaraderie she feels with her fellow rookies. “You feel like you have a sister in it, going through the newness with you,” she said. “Everyone brought something different to the table, and I know we’re going to get closer and closer.”

Unfortunately, Aaliyah Edwards and Shakira Austin will miss the game against the Dream due to injuries, which may grant more playing time for Iriafen and her fellow rookies. “I’ve had great coaches who prepared me to play at this level,” she added. “For me, what’s going to help me succeed is just being a sponge.”

As the season approaches, the excitement is palpable for Iriafen and the Mystics, looking to make a new start after last year’s challenges.
