CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) — Michael Thorbjornsen, a 23-year-old rookie on the PGA Tour, is poised for success at the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club. After carding a strong 3-under 68 in the opening round, he temporarily found himself in second place before finishing Friday’s play with a 1-under 70 that brings him to 4-under for the tournament.

Thorbjornsen is in great shape heading into the weekend, contrasting his previous major experience. His best finish was 79th at the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where he became the second-youngest player to make the cut. Now, he faces the unique pressures of major competition for the first time.

“Hard work,” Thorbjornsen said, crediting his recent success to perseverance. After battling illness earlier this year and adjusting to a new caddie, he believes he is ready for the challenge. His recent performances include a tie for fourth with Stanford teammate Karl Vilips at the Zurich Classic and a tie for second at the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Lance Bennett, Thorbjornsen’s new caddie of 22 years, has extensive experience, having worked with golf legends like Tiger Woods and Matt Kuchar. He sees great potential in Thorbjornsen and believes his demeanor is crucial during high-pressure moments. “I always try to be very calm and chill on the course,” Bennett explained.

Bennett’s familiarity with Quail Hollow, where he has caddied about eight times, could provide strategic advantage as they navigate the next rounds. Thorbjornsen appreciates Bennett’s ability to keep him grounded. “He’s really good about noticing if I’m antsy,” he said, adding that Bennett helps him focus and stay relaxed.

Reflecting on his transition from college golf to the professional stage, Thorbjornsen expressed, “It’s crazy, we’re like our own CEOs out here now.” As he embraces this new chapter, he aims to capitalize on this opportunity to claim his first major title.
