Imola Emilia Romagna Grand Prix F1 2025

IMOLA, Italy – The 2025 Formula 1 season continues this weekend as teams gather at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Starting on May 16, free practice sessions will pave the way for a thrilling race on Sunday, May 18.

Oscar Piastri, the current leader in the Drivers’ Championship with 131 points, secured pole position, giving him a strategic advantage on the tight Imola circuit. Teams will be keen to develop strategies overnight to catch the McLaren star, who recently finished 37.644 seconds ahead of third-place at the Miami Grand Prix.

“Imola is a challenging circuit with steep inclines and narrow lanes,” said Jolyon Palmer, former Renault driver. “There’s little room for error, especially around the tough corners such as Acqua Minerale and Turn 17.” Palmer emphasized the importance of track position and qualifying at this circuit due to limited overtaking opportunities.

This weekend, Pirelli is introducing its softest tire compounds, including the debut of the C6. With a low average load and limited degradation expected, the tire strategy could play a critical role during the race.

Last year, a one-stop strategy proved most competitive, with many drivers opting for the medium (C4) tires. Pirelli indicated that it will be interesting to see if a softer approach will affect race performance. “With only one DRS zone, drivers must carefully manage their race strategies for optimal pit timing,” added the tire supplier.

Max Verstappen, three-time winner at Imola, remains a strong contender along with his team Red Bull, while Mercedes hopes to capitalize on George Russell‘s recent podium performance in Miami. The race also marks Kimi Antonelli‘s first home Grand Prix, raising the stakes for Mercedes to impress local fans.

As the weekend approaches, all eyes are on McLaren, who are expected to maintain their impressive momentum after dominating in recent races. Teams will need to find a balance between tire management, strategy, and driving skill as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.

Fans are reminded that the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is steeped in history, making it a must-watch event for motorsport enthusiasts.
